Backwards compatible markup is trivial.

You note best technology for HTML world for 3D on the web which is for the
most part, an oxymoron. HTML is ecologically a writer's system. 3D is not.

Adoption is not a measure of fitness. It is a measure of utility by the
dominant class of author. There is none in the HTML community for 3D.

So X3D adoption is not really an issue for HTML to control or circumscribe.
WebGL, well, that is where the 3D programming is centered for the vertex
schlepping. Adoption of 3D is a composability proble,.

The challenge for 3D in the HTML world is composability in a mixed
namespace. In short, even in VRML boxes and spheres are easier to place and
modify than indexed face sets. HTML works simply because in terms of
composability, everyone knows how to place rectangles and type inside of
them. They can do this quickly and efficiently for cost and application.

This is not true of 3D. So, is the composability challenge addressed in the
markup or in the GUI? If in the markup, how general is it (number of
neighboring language transforms), if in the GUI: how are behaviors marked?

Does it support a drag and drop (eg, XtraNormal like) composition system, or
does it represent it directly in the markup (ease of text entry vs
representation of composition object internals)

I apologize for any typos. Dilated pupils. Eye exam

Hi,

I fully agree that backward compatibility is important in general -- but
I would not want to put backwards compatibility as our main objective.
This is not a Web3D working group.

Instead we should strive for the best possible 3D within the Web/HTML
world going forward, but see that we can maintain as much compatibility
as possible where it is necessary. This is where I am happy that we have
Johannes on board, who has created X3DOM primarily with that aspect in
mind. We already had quite some discussions on this topic.

However, we should also look at things in perspective and be pragmatic:
X3D's adoption compared to the Web as a whole is rather small (BTW, is
there any reliable statistics available, like # of X3D files on the Web,
size of the user community, use of feature set, or such?).

BTW, backwards compatibility can come in many ways: from the ability to
simply load X3D files (which ones? there are so many profiles and
encodings) to a converter. Actually, Kristian's X3D to XML3D converter
is already doing a pretty good job, while being only a side project so far.
