The first version was a native C++ implementation from 2008/2009 and was a patched mozialla UA (http://www.x3dom.org/x3dom/paper/2009-x3dom-web3d.pdf)
The system evolved over the time and uses now a JS-layer as thin frontend which supports native, X3D-SAI or WebGL as driving backend (http://www.x3dom.org/x3dom/paper/2009-x3dom-web3d.pdf )

An updated version of the fallback model can be found on the web-page:
http://www.x3dom.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/x3dom-fallback-Release-1.1.png

There are now two native implementation. The iOS/WebKit based version mostly used for AR
and the InstantReality-Plugin which can be used as X3D-SAI backend for x3dom

http://www.instantreality.org/

You can e.g. download an dailybuild of the Wn32 Version of the instantReality system,
install and register the ActiveX-plugin to get every X3DOM application (with some limitations)
running inside of Internet Explorer. All this without changing a single line of your content.

best regards
johannes
