X3D-Edit uses Netbeans and runs either as a plugin or a standalone
application. Netbeans appears to have good Python support (possibly
dated, not sure). So it would be possible to use both together.

http://wiki.netbeans.org/Python
http://netbeans.org/kb/69/python/python-quickstart.html
http://netbeans.org/kb/69/python/jython-quickstart.html
http://wiki.netbeans.org/NetBeansPythonTutorial
http://netbeans.org/kb/69/python/temperature-converter.html

If someone is interested in defining an SAI binding for Python, that
would be great. Would be happy to set us a special teleconference
meeting of X3D Working Group to discuss what is involved.

Jython is a java implementation of Python. So conceivably someone could
write X3D Script node binding for Python as part of Xj3D.

all the best, Don
