[X3D-Public] Map and Aerial Imagery Server for X3D Geospatial Extensions?

Whatever happened to the plans to set up a publicly accesible server for map and aerial imagery data to be used by X3D geospatial extensions? The last I heard of it, a few years ago, was that Dr. Brutzman had obtained funding to set up the servers. Is my memory correct?
