thanks again.
I'll go and check out the book you mentioned, we have it here at IGD. I remember that I had a look at several chapters, but I probably skipped the history part at that time ;- )
I hope that we can are able to provide some extensive X3DOM documentation resources for all available nodes ASAP.

we did a major revision of the specification documents when going from Version 2.0 (VRML97) to Version 3.0 (X3D).
so literally they are different specifications. though VRML97 remains active and we can receive/process error reports.
The X3D Immersive Profile is a close approximation to the VRML97 nodes, it adds a few extra.
You can find a comparison of those X3D to VRML nodes as part of the support spreadsheet at
