In support of this week's ISO meetings in London, I've created some new diagrams and updated a short slideset summarizing X3D Efficient Binary Encoding (EBE) design components.

X3D Efficient Binary Encoding: Progress Summary, 24 March 2015

The diagrams illustrate how the design evolution from 19776-3 Compressed Binary Encoding (CBE) to create 19776-4 Efficient Binary Encoding (EBE) are pretty straightforward substitutions:

- Java3D geometric compression replaced by Fraunhofer's SRC Shape Resource Container
- Fast Infoset (FI) compression of XML replaced by Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) compression

The ability to digitally sign/authenticate and encrypt models using XML Security standards remains preserved.

The CAD Distillation Format (CDF) approach of incremental scene improvements is also preserved. Still on wish list: compressors for interpolators and volume data.

Available as an attachment and at our overview page, online at

For convenience, also belatedly added there are the EBE workshop slides from the Web3D 2015 conference.

Comments and improvements are always welcome. Discussion and development continues as part of Working Group efforts.

all the best, Don
