(a little more opinionated version this time) No way, no never, no how!  Prototypes are a well-proven capability and the primary strength that makes the X3D language truly Extensible.

Since X3D prototypes extend the language of X3D by using the vocabulary (nodes) of the language itself while defining internal relationships, template design is a natural and appropriate metaphor.

Incidentally an interesting future test for WebComponents (whenever it is sufficiently mature) is whether someone might use that technology to implement prototypes in DOM-based X3D.
