Thanks for the feedback.

I don't think your CON is correct. Remember, it would be like an XML
encoding. So, no additional wrapping. In  fact, it's actually shorter than
your original encoding. My version, 34 lines. Your alternate encoding
version, 42 lines.

pretty interesting!

not sure it is a complete rewrite at all, but it is different.  additional
pros/cons:

CON: when "-children" not already present, it does add yet-another layer of
wrapping around child nodes.
PRO: lossless round-trip conversions possible, since order is preserved.
