Nice to hear! With the new SRC format (http://x3dom.org/src/), we 
already have something very similar to glTF, but also with support for 
progressive loading.
For X3DOM, there is currently a basic SRC support via the 
"ExternalGeometry" node - you can find some minimalistic examples on the 
SRC project page.
