Am getting a similar problem under Windows 8.  Somewhat puzzling since the other archive .zips are opening OK.

Java jar utility and cygwin gnu unzip utility each have no trouble with it.  Will investigate further.

Workaround: X3D-Edit (standalone or netbeans plugin) has a panel under X3D > Examples > Download Examples Archives that will pull it down and extract/install it wherever you choose.  Panel screenshot attached.
