Thanks for this report Andreas, very interesting.

When convenient, a comparison check please:  can you install/run Netbeans, then add the X3D-Edit plugin modules?  This would likely isolate any Java problems prior to getting X3D-Edit involved.

Currently X3D-Edit reliability problems only seem to occur when it is running as a standalone application, so eliminating Java configuration issues will help diagnose the difficulties.

We currently develop using the oracle JDK 1.8 latest, and have maintained source compatibility with Java 1.7. Not sure about (haven't tested) other Java implementations.
