[x3d-public] 360 Video

Doug,

There is monoscopic 360 Video - the phone/tablet/display has only a
single frame per frame. You can look anywhere, but there is no 3D
effect. Stereoscopic 360 Video has two frames per frame - one for each
eye. This usually requires a head display (Cardboard, GearVR, etc.) and
is frequently used with stereo headphones. The movie was either filmed
in 3D or 3D was made in post production (current practice is to do it in
post).

There have been several productions of shorts that are of the same
quality as movies.

> If its side-by-side in the same frame, then you'd have different texture coords for left and right side.

>> VR Video aka 360 Video is video that occupies all 4pi steradians of
>> view about the user. These videos come in stereo (3D) or mono. The
>> stereo movies need to be played through a device that generates a left
>> and right image and is typically viewed through Cardboard, GearVR, or
>> equivalent. This video is available on YouTube and several other

>>
>> X3D provides a MovieTexture node that will display a video as a
>> texture. To make X3D more interesting (and usable) for VR
>> applications, support for this format is needed. The video is
>> frequently played on the inside of a sphere and the device's motion
>> sensors are used to provide orientation to the display.
>>
>> Should X3D V4 have this capability?
>> Should a video-sphere be automatically provided?
>> Should a developer be able to choose a different screen-surface
>> geometry?
