An idea to give more freedom to developers who want to experiment outside what's possible with proto, externproto, script and url: reserve profiles with reverse domain names and don't require standard amendment or registration <http://www.web3d.org/documents/specifications/19775-1/V3.3/Part01/concepts.html#ProfilesOverview>. That would be similar to x-* names in mime types, for instance, with the syntax of Java namespaces. For example the owner of domain "example.com" could use

PROFILE com.example

(or any subname) for whatever syntax extension she wants.

The dotted syntax conflicts with the definition of profileNameId <http://www.web3d.org/documents/specifications/19776-2/V3.3/index.html>. If that's a problem, use the slash instead, a valid character in Id:

PROFILE com/example
