[x3d-public] X3D Stencil Buffer defined?

RE: "I have no idea what a Stencil Buffer is or would do. I have not seen anything by this name. What does this do and where/why/when would it be used?"

That was exactly my reaction when it came up in a GearVR meeting.

There is a Stencil interface, operation and function in my handy WebGL 2 Quick Reference. So, something exists.

I think it is just a mask to say "render these pixels but not in the areas it is masked out".

Not sure the value of a stencil buffer over defining a texture map, sending it to the Fragment Shader as a way to say render some of these pixels, but not others.

Thanks for the help.

Mitch

Mitch,
Is there <Stencil Buffer> node (or similar) defined in X3D, either part of the language, or someone such as X3Dom added it?

I have no idea what a Stencil Buffer is or would do. I have not seen anything by this name. What does this do and where/why/when would it be used?

Leonard Daly

We are looking at implementing this in GearVR.
