B. Summary and Technical reports

Opportunity for anyone to make a short report on Web site, marketing,
communication, specification or technical matters that is not already on the
Agenda.

1.	Report on Mantis SG meeting held Thursday 19th October 2017

Reference:
http://web3d.org/mailman/private/x3d_web3d.org/2017-October/006452.html

Roy reported that fourteen older Mantis issues with the status still on New
were triaged. After review, ten were agreed to be implemented and the status
updated to Assigned, one was agreed to need information from the DPS group
and the status updated to feedback, and one was agreed to need more
discussion and the status was updated to acknowledged. For the other two it
was agreed that no changes were required, so the issue statuses were updated
to Resolved, with a resolution of "no change required".

2.	Report on Mantis SG meeting held Monday 23rd October 2017

Roy reported that there was discussion of the SAI, the language bindings,
X3DJSAIL, and the Object Model, following the series of four postings on
"Building an X3D Object Model". Greater understanding was achieved, although
no decisions were taken. Next steps will involve looking at some
illustrative examples.

All five new Mantis issues raised from specification comments submitted last
week were triaged. Three issues needed more discussion, and their statuses
were updated to Acknowledged, one issue was agreed and the status updated to
Assigned, and the other issue, which needed more information, had the status
updated to feedback. While discussing these issues there was also some
review of the specification comment workflow handling processes, and
recognition that some improvements could be made.

3.	Report on H-Anim V2.0 CD2 standards progress

Meeting with Myeong Won Lee

Roy reported that he had a good discussion with Myeong Won Lee on Monday, it
being impractical for him to attend the H-Anim WG meetings. The comments
that Myeong Won was concerned about were discussed. Some comments were no
longer applicable, as the text had already been changed. Others were
reviewed and agreed.

4.	Comment on rigid body physics examples by Paul Masson.

Don reported that he had added a warning to the example archive, following
receipt of a comment by Paul Masson expressing concern that the rigid body
physics examples did not appear to work.

5.	Lots of feedback from John. Include USE nodes and comments. Affects
JSON schema

Don reported that John Carlson has provided a large quantity of feedback on
topics related to the Object Model and JSON, among other things. These have
included observations on being able to add comments to a node that has a USE
attribute. This is important for the JSON language binding and schema, where
we are developing the JSON schema validate more strictly the use of the
"USE" attribute.

6.	Tools and converters

Don reported that there is significant momentum building up on tools and
converters. The STEP converter developed by Vince is providing significant
impetus.

7.	Extrusion, triangle and other geometry nodes.

Don reported that there are very few warnings on degenerate geometry in the
standards. He will follow up with specification comments.

C. Discussion Topics

1.	Physically based rendering

Where are we now? Where do we want to go? What are our next steps?

The topic opened with clarification of the term "Physically based
rendering", explaining that this is about advanced rendering. The Wikipedia
page at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physically_based_rendering provides a
brief summary of this topic.

Dick reported that he was aware of a presentation on a "Material Definition
Language" that was well attended. This was quickly established to be an
NVIDIA technology, with a web page at
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/design-visualization/technologies/material-defi
nition-language/. NVIDIA have published a specification for the Material
Definition Language (MDL) at

http://developer2.download.nvidia.com/designworks/mdl-sdk/secure/MDL_spec_1.

MDL handbook was available at http://www.mdlhandbook.com/.

It was agreed that we would allow time for everyone to review this material,
and then discuss it further at another meeting.

2.	Incorporation of Leonard's comments into glTF/X3D features
spreadsheet

This document was reviewed and updated in place based on the comments
submitted by Leonard. The first 11 of Leonards comments were worked through,
leaving seven for a subsequent discussion. A snapshot of the document as
updated is attached to these minutes.

3.	Review of Korea Chapter Meeting presentation at Siggraph 2017 - MAR
Updates

Mixed and Augmented Reality (MAR) Updates, ISO/IEC SC24 Working Group 9 by
convener Dr. Gerry Kim, Korea University
