[x3d-public] developing X3D metadata conventions for EXIF and XMP multimedia

Conventions for including and reading metadata in common applications is an important goal shared by both CAD Design Printing Scanning and Medical working groups.

Exchangeable image file format (Exif) "is a standard that specifies the formats for images, sound, and ancillary tags used by digital cameras (including smartphones), scanners and other systems handling image and sound files recorded by digital cameras." It is supported by JPEG TIFF and WAV formats.

	https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exif

Exif is related to Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP), which is "an ISO standard for the creation, processing and interchange of standardized and custom metadata for digital documents and data sets."

Looks like a variety of free and commercial software libraries exist for reading EXIF/XMP metadata. For example:

	Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) Toolkit
	http://www.adobe.com/devnet/xmp.html
	(under open-source Apache license)

It is likely that working groups will consider consistent mapping of metadata convention to X3D strongly typed Metadata* nodes as recommended practices. This is how we build broad re-usable capabilities.

Wondering if anyone wants to work on this further? (For example, looks straightforward to add such metadata support to X3D-Edit and X3DJSAIL.)

All feedback welcome, thanks for considering the possibilities.

all the best, Don
