Additive Manufacturing Business Model Workshops

You are invited to join government, industry, and academia/non-profit leaders to participate in the upcoming Additive Manufacturing Business Model Workshops, held 30 – 31 May, 2018,  that will be held at Lockheed Martin Vision Global Center in Crystal City, VA.  This business model workshop is a follow up to the business model wargame held at the Lockheed Martin Center for Innovation on 16 – 17 May, 2017.  The purpose of this workshop is to address five business model aspects of additive manufacturing for sustainment and production consistent with public-private partnership principals in parallel to additive manufacturing technical community efforts.

The workshop is being sponsored by America Makes Additive Manufacturing for Maintenance and Sustainment Advisory Group and Additive Manufacturing for Maintenance Operations (AMMO) Working Group. We are looking for government, industry and academia/non-profit to actively participate in the workshop.  Five business model integrated teams will be assembled to focus on key business areas.  The teams will consist of key disciplines: Program Management, Legal, Engineering, Logistics (maintenance and supply), Enterprise IT and Contracts Administration. This event presents a unique opportunity for AM leaders and functional stakeholders to work through a simulated acquisition process to collaboratively develop and document business model alternatives.
Additive Manufacturing Business Model Workshops

The Additive Manufacturing Business Model Workshops will feature these focus areas:

*Develop an AM Contracting Guide for Navy / DoD*

Abstract:  There is a need for a singular source, or guide, that lays out the various business models and methods of acquisition for AM-related products and services so that DoD is able to maximize the value of AM investments, and ensure interoperability of this game-changing technology. The guide will incorporate recent government-industry collaboratively developed products at the OSD AM Wargames, the Naval AM Technical Interchange and other similar efforts. Additionally, this group will examine DoD acquisition requirements and how they impact the unique manufacturing and repair capabilities provided by AM.

*Information Assurance on 3D Technical Data Packages and Blockchain*

Abstract:  This working group will consist of government and industry members working to identify measures that secure data transmissions such as technical data package (TDP) sharing and data transfer amongst AM machines within the digital infrastructure. The group will explore the cyber security solution, including Blockchain technology and its capabilities to verify and record digital transactions, and its’ application in contracting and property ownership.

*Pathfinder Scenario Study of AM Repair Part*

Abstract:  This working group will conduct an End-to-End “Pathfinder” study that looks at the DoD AM repair part process from requirement determination, through contracting, design and manufacturing, certification and qualification, and delivery. The working group will be comprised of personnel with varying fields of expertise to include contracting, finance, logistics, engineering, and information technology. The study may involve a wargame type scenario involving a specific repair part moving through the entire process.

*3D Model Exchange*

Abstract:  This working group will examine the development of a 3D-Model/Print Exchange that provides 3D-models for 3D-Printers to assist sustainment professionals in maintaining and sustaining their equipment.  The exchange would provide an environment to create and share 3D-printable models, modeling tutorials, and educational material.  This ability to share 3D-model data within a library of files has the potential to reduce costs and lead-times for maintenance and sustainment of equipment and a reduction in the cost of supply, transportation, and distribution channels for repair parts.

*Additive Manufacturing Intellectual Property Management*

Abstract: Additive manufacturing (AM) lowers traditional barriers for producing physical parts from the digital information that describes them. As the value of the intellectual property (IP) defined by these data increases, commercial industry has growing concerns about how their IP is managed. This working group will examine IP management gaps that limit DoD’s use of AM for on-demand manufacturing. The group will identify and analyze relevant scenarios and hold a mock negotiation to explore licensing considerations around IP valuation, quality assurance, digital rights management, and other key decision points. The outcome of the session will be tangible next steps for an integrated approach to addressing the AM IP management gaps.
