I Googled "computer graphics viscous fluid" and got a number of 
interesting results. Wikipedia has a "fluid animation" page to get 
things started. It seems to me that the emitter depends on the type of 
lava and how it is leaving the mountain. You might wish to look at 
Unreal and Unity for ideas. -
