To me it looks like the Protos in the document are only there to
reinforce the signatures of the group/transform like HAnim nodes, and
perhaps as a fallback if these nodes are not supported natively by a
browser. Not sure if it is a good idea to have the Protos in the
example. Perhaps a separate section on implementation notes could have
those instead.

The reason why these examples are given in VRML encoding is perhaps
that the Protos could be just omitted and the main Humanoid node would
still work. In XML encoding, the Protos would be only useful if there
are corresponding ProtoInstances, eg. without the Protos the XML of
the main Humanoid starts to look different. Also, VRML is less verbose
and little easier to look at.
