Yes, is as i understood fragment shaders, this would be possible.
But according to the X3D standards, a sphere may not change its single
parameter (radius)
during models lifetime.
So it may be wiser to account the polygons of a sphere soemhow once and
draw this late
multiple times.
Optimization is good, but sometimes it is overkill....
