One thing x3d does not do for HLA is: 
 A save operation requires both the RTI and each federate to perform a save of their internal state.

Has anyone considered HLA (High Level Architecture) and X3D together?  What advantages are there to Federation that DIS misses the point of?

I’m thinking of multi server Metaverse GUI at this point…
