[x3d-public] 19775-2 Scene Access Interface (SAI) review/revision and completion timeline

I did some searching through WD1 below (not actual reading, which may be a
problem), and I was unable to find specific items for addChild, and similar
services for MFNode typed fields, which was an addition for X3DJSAIL, IMU.
I realize this may be in the Java SAI standard, or only addChildren (or
similar) is the only thing required by the abstract SAI standards…set or
override children fields.

I’d like to raise addChild as something that probably should be supported
by the bindings, not by abstract SAI. The abstract SAI should provide for
adding many children at once (maybe just one, not zero).

I realize that adding many children at once offers some efficiencies as
well as design benefits.

I might suggest that addChild should be removed from X3DJSAIL if not
desirable, understanding that there are constraints to number of children
that can be added at once, due to limited code size. There should be no
limits on binding MF collections of nodes outside of the scenegraph.

I’m not sure if this is clear, and I didn’t look at Java SAI.

Implementing arrays or MFNodes of nodes in Java may lead to some
complications in my JavaSerializer.js, but I feel comfortable that I can
address these at this point. It would be good to know what’s planned in
the Java SAI standard, based on a possible absence in abstract SAI.

Thanks,

John
