Accidentally, I came along the discussion in chapter 1.1.3 of RFC 3986.<br/>
<br/>
Now I'm wondering, if X3D/VRML shouldn't use URIs rather than URLs in most of the "url" fields.<br/>
<br/>
E.g. If I want to refer to a common texture like the "American flag", than a URN might be more adequate than a URL.<br/>
<br/>
Or, if I want to output a video conference to a movie texture, then a SIP URI might be more adequate than a URL.<br/>
<br/>
