The International Standards Organization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) are the controlling authorities for Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 1 which is responsible for this formal standardization process. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>X3D version 4.0 follows a long and steady path of standardization, reaching all the way back to the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) standard in 1997.
