Joe, We don't have impressive stuff. Just colored point clouds at this point. We can demo it, but we need SphereSets which could be groups of X_ITE InstancedShape Spheres, but we need to determine how to group identical Material (Appearance) at least. We have very large PLY files currently. Converting this accurately to X3D makes huge files, and SphereSets or InstancedShapes (with different colors) are indicated.

I'm guessing only I'm the only one interested in grouping Material at this point, and I don't know how to parse a PLY file. I am providing my code as a starting point. Just realize this system was compromised March 31st, so open this file in a safe manner (I suggest in the cloud). I will rescan my system.

I think Michalis might be best prepared to create a SphereSet in Pascal.

PlyToX3D.zip

I got distracted from HAnim on this.

Thanks,

John

On Wed, Apr 8, 2026 at 6:19 PM Joe D Williams via x3d-public <x3d-public@web3d.org> wrote:

Hi,
MSF 3D Assets had a meeting and asked me about Web3D and GSplats.
I sort of said waiting for guidance from glTF and not much activity.
(I had not really been thinking about it.)
Then I thought to send the following to the MSF 3D Assets list.
I would like to see demos to show at MSF meeting.

Hi All, (MSF 3D Assets WG)
I under reported Web3D interest and activity concerning nDGS, tiles, creation, transport, rendering, and interaction. Just wasn't following the topic.

Now 'splats' activity on x3d-public(mailto:x3d-public@web3d.org).

"... it might help to have a couple of slides that show web3D interest."

"It makes sense perhaps to do an X3D GaussianSplat Component and nodes matching like we did gltf/pbr.
Then they would work like they do in 3D Tiles Sandcastle | CesiumJS "

https://www.khronos.org/news/press/gltf-gaussian-splatting-press-release
https://github.com/KhronosGroup/glTF/blob/main/extensions/2.0/Khronos/KHR_gaussian_splatting/README.md

"why not just follow the new Khronos standard extension to gltf ?"

"A Splatogrammetry solver component built into an x3d browser
could simulate splat workflow ..."

"... I think the glTF is not complete and maybe some proprietary stuffs ..."

"add splat rendering node, at least gltf variant...
all-in - add splat and photogrammetry component,
with splats from MovieTexture or ImageTextures,
including save to file ..."

"I am using the term “data sources” rather than
model or scene, because I don’t think those terms
of scene or model apply to splat rendering."

"... we want to use the gaussian splat technique for
rendering minerals/rocks that was demonstrated
at the Web3D conference last year."

"... I had to look up splatting.
Interesting and with high quality rendering
Compared to X3D;
1. Lose interactivity
2. Lose real time data input to model.
3. Lose extensibility
It seems to be a runtime for image sourced 3D models."

"How does this fit with X3D?"

Add an experience session showing a couple of splatters and some gsplat tests?
Thanks and All Best,
Joe
