we did a major revision of the specification documents when going from Version 2.0 (VRML97) to Version 3.0 (X3D).

so literally they are different specifications.  though VRML97 remains active and we can receive/process error reports.

The X3D Immersive Profile is a close approximation to the VRML97 nodes, it adds a few extra.

You can find a comparison of those X3D to VRML nodes as part of the support spreadsheet at
