[x3d-public] Looking for a new project

Octave is a great target!
Matlab actually has some nice X3D, VRML (Simulink) AND X3DOM support:

http://www.mathworks.com/help/sl3d/x3d-extensible-3d-graphics.html

https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/32207-matlab-3d-figure-to-3d--x-html

If you like scientific visualization,
we have some ideas for improvements to paraview.org's X3D export:

one should have the option for exporting glyphs as a per-vertex colored,
singular mesh (good for coordinate interpolators and currently supported)
OR as primitives (Box, Cone, Cylinder, Sphere)
