Dick, Jakub and I worked for some time on trying to ensure that little or no ambiguity was possible regarding metadata (the field) and metadata (information) in the specification.
Small editorial refinements, with much amplification:

Summary 0001361: 7.3.5 X3DNode /metadata/ field description and clarification for each Metadata* node
Description
a. Need to add clarifying sentence:
The /metadata/ field provides metadata information about the current node, as described in [7.2.4 Metadata].
b. Proposed further addition to clarify/disambiguate semantics of /metadata/ field and metadata as a word, for each node definition 7.4.1 though 7.4.6:
Replace "The metadata provided by this node"
with "The metadata information provided by this node"
Additional Information
a. First statement matches our regular practice of defining all fields.
b. Second statement was originally intended as a potential clarification of MetadataSet field semantics, likely for 7.4.5 Metadata. This is a long-running point of confusion that has led to convoluted metadata models and discussions, hoping for a clarification of rules that is useful.
Disambiguating "metadata" field (incorrect) and "metadata" information (correct) in each case by simply stating "metadata information" provides a helpful and consistent reinforcement for each of the relevant nodes.
This is a difficult issue for avoiding editorial ambiguity, many iterations led to the current refined prose.

This is all in X3D4 Core Component.
