➢ free?

Go for it. X3dom folks and everyone will be happy to see you work with examples.

Are examples at x3dom.org free?

HI,
What are you animating?
Regular user code for animation will probably include a Time sensor, an interpolator for each item to be animated, and routes to get the timer to the interpolator and the interpolator outputs to the item being animated, Take a look at the JoeKick model and see the timer and interpolator and routes for each of the joint nodes being animated.
A simple animation could be done using a script that computes the keyframe for the next animation step. That is shown in the boxman, where the script computes the skin deformation.
Good Luck,
Joe
