I noticed a mistake:

instead all the *Material have a .backmaterial field
"""

-> actually we have Appearance.backMaterial .

The particular XxxMaterial (at least the non-deprecated ones, so forgetting
TwoSidedMaterial) don't deal with sidedness at all. They specify one set of
properties.
