[x3d-public] extruded text in X3D - TinkerCAD

Took a closer look and realized Tinkercad was a free online tool. Again thanks, very helpful.

I have repeated your approach and saved out versions in glb, obj/mtl, stl, svg. Here is what that Tinkercad text creation looked like:

Converted each into X3D using Castle Engine. Scaled down by 100 and adjusted viewpoints, X3D-Edit quite helpful. GLB version also needed 90-degree rotation about X axis to render correctly as an X3D Inline. All of this is now committed in Web3D Consortium open source and online at

When testing with X3D-Edit “Autolaunch all browsers” the models worked in most places. Some players are having trouble with gapped polygons in the STL version. Three players able to load glb (glTF binary) are view3dscene, X_ITE and X3DOM.

Had trouble rendering their produced SVG (which they offer for lathe layout). Will try some other things.

Have fun with X3D extruded text! 8)

Vince, thanks, looks super. How about be capture all of this as an online example in

We might start with your files which I can double-check after installing TinkerCAD to demonstrate repeatability. Or restart from scratch if necessary. Thanks for considering this.

TinkerCad (www.tinkercad.com <http://www.tinkercad.com> ; an Autodesk site) is a 3D Printing oriented design tool aimed at beginner/hobbyist segment, offers creation of text extrusions for

a select series of fonts. Free account level available, offers export in OBJ, STL, and glTF.

OBJ and STL conversion available in Meshlab, Castle Game Engine. See https://www.web3d.org/obj-format-x3d-conversion

Extruding text characters for a given font has always been a frequently requested task using VRML and X3D. Seems even more useful when considering X3D models for 3D printing.

X3D has flat Text using FontStyle and screen-sized Text using ScreenFontStyle, but no extruded 3D font style.

Historical blockers to this goal have been computational expense (especially for keeping VRML/X3D players lightweight) and lack of openly available font libraries. Neither of these seems like a blocker these days, especially given much development and availability of WebFonts and CSS fonts module.

I found one online tool supporting 3D extrusion of text. Lots of great options. Tried to extrude "X3D" using their default BlackJack font, things moved along swimmingly right up to the next-to-last page requesting $13.57 USD. Uh, no thanks.

Wondering if anyone has a good approach for creating extruded 3D text in X3D?
