Dick Puk and I have been working steadily to update multiple X3D specifications. This work is being performed as the X3D Standards Working Group<https://www.web3d.org/working-groups/x3d-standards> to steadily advance all X3D specifications to match the X3D 4.0 Architecture.

We are happy to report that four draft X3D specifications are now ready for review and comment by X3D community and Web3D Consortium members.

  *
19776-1 X3D XML Encoding 4.0<https://www.web3d.org/specifications/X3Dv4Draft/ISO-IEC19776-1v4.0-WD1/Part01/X3D_XML.html> revision
  *
19776-2 X3D Classic VRML Encoding 4.0<https://www.web3d.org/specifications/X3Dv4Draft/ISO-IEC19776-2v4.0-WD1/Part02/X3D_ClassicVRML.html> revision
  *
19775-2 X3D Scene Authoring Interface (SAI) 4.0<https://web3d.org/specifications/X3Dv4Draft/ISO-IEC19775-2v4.0-CD/Part02/X3D_SAI.html> advancement to ISO DIS by June 2025
  *
19775-1 X3D Architecture 4.1<https://www.web3d.org/specifications/X3Dv4Draft/ISO-IEC19775-1v4.1-CD//Part01/Architecture.html> maintenance; we are carefully checking and refining existing work, not calling for brand-new capabilities.

  *
yellow: proposed addition
  *
orange: proposed deletion
  *
cyan: editors note
  *
white: unchanged from prior specification

The first two, XML and ClassicVRML encodings, are especially important. Recommended approach is to review them together in two browser tabs, side-by-side for clarity. You will see that these legacy documents have been reorganized somewhat so that these two specifications now correspond closely. We expect that this consistent structure will help with everyone's understanding and also help when we pursue the JSON encoding sometime this year.

Please read, review, and comment! As usual, technical discussion on the archived x3d-public at web3d.org mailing list. Are your "favorite" issues handled satisfactorily?

We also wanted to report that the long-running rules with ISO are changing somewhat, and the evolving process is being closely tracked by Web3D Consortium leadership. We have clear paths forward, with accelerating progress thanks to the technical achievements of X3D 4.0 Architecture. Each of these new drafts consistently match those X3D 4.0 capabilities.

As shown on the Web3D Calendar, one of our weekly editor meetings remains 09-1000 pacific if direct discussion is ever necessary. Additional assets linked in the calendar appointment:

We are now in our third decade of progress, following the initial concepts and demonstrations for the original "Virtual Reality Markup Language" discussed at SIGGRAPH 94 and Web3D 95 conferences. None of this stable evolution can occur without the efforts of Web3D Consortium members. Please consider joining Web3D, as an individual or an organizational representative. Membership has value.

Thanks in advance for all review, comments, examples and implementations. Onward we go together.

Have fun with X3D! 🙂
