OK, understand now. I looked at one

It has four different pixel values. The file does report that the
pixel bit depth is 32. It appears that this is more of an image mask
than a screen capture. Another reason for suspecting a mask is that
the shinny examples (e.g., Metals or Glass) should have various
light to dark regions due to reflectance and shadow. I do not see
anything like that.<br>

Roy's attached images show in color for me. I am using
Thunderbird for preview and GIMP for manipulation. The
bottom checkerboard plane is light & dark gray with
text in white. The sphere's show in color with highlights.

3D models do have colour. I don’t know if they were
captured as monochrome to save disk space. Each thumbnail
file is a PNG file, with a resolution of 128x128 and a
bit depth of 32. The first attached image is from
ArtDecoExamples.x3d, Low Right Viewpoint at the same
resolution settings.</span><o:p></o:p></p>

viewpoint images on the web site are also all monochrome.
The resolution is 792x465 with a bit depth of 32. The

example and viewpoint as the first. This latter image is
