I agree it doesn't have to fit every scenario: the way I see it you'd use
it as scenegraph definition and as-is during development, and you could use
another format (binary, with streaming, lods, etc..) for production,
similar to how JS webapps get bundled and minified instead of serving the
plain sources even though that would work too.
