Getting Started with X3D

Welcome to the world of real-time, interactive, on-line 3D. You will need a couple of things to get started before viewing your first 3D environment.

  1. Download and install a 3D viewer. There are two viewers from Web3D Consortium members that will easily work in your web browser. Clicking on the links will open a new window (tab). After completing the steps at the destination page, return to this window (tab) to continue.
    1. Bitmanagement's BS Contact is a full-featured X3D-Browser that installs as a plug-in (description download).
    2. An HTML5-compatible browser is also available. This X3D-Browser is written in JavaScript and requires an WebGL-compatible browser. It has a smaller feature-set that BS Contact, but does not require a separate download and install (description).
  2. Depending on the browser you selected in Step 1, you can visit a variety of content pages. The table below progresses from simple to more complex content. Due to different target markets, not all browsers can display all content. Please choose the content that is appropriate to your choice from Step 1.

      1. FreeWRL/FreeX3D X3D/VRML browser (open-source C). Also available via Apple website (Windows MacOSX Linux).
      2. InstantReality is a high-performance Mixed Reality (MR) system (Windows MacOSX Linux).
      3. Sensegraphics H3DAPI is an open-source C++ API for X3D that includes the haptics support, the Rigid Body Physics component, plus the proposed Volume Visualization component for the Medical Working Group.

    • Authoring/Developer tools
      1. X3D: Extensible Graphics for Web Authors is the primary reference book on X3D.
      2. X3D-Edit is the primary authoring tool used at NPS to create the X3D, Sourcebook and SAVAGE examples. Available free.
      3. BS Editor is the authoring tool from BitManagement.
      4. Vivaty Studio (formerly Flux Studio and VizX3D) is a high-quality authoring tool from Vivaty. It is an easy-to-use, inexpensive, general-purpose, visually oriented, 3D modeling and animation application for X3D.
      5. Blender is an open-source 3D authoring tool that includes support for X3D import/export. Some external plugins are also available.
      6. Xj3D is an open source Java-based X3D toolkit.
