This edition is the Draft International Standard (DIS) specification
which has undergone multiple series of reviews by ISO Member nations,
most recently being the ISO Proposed Draft Amendment (PDAM) review.
The primary additions in this version are the Volume rendering component,
relaxation/deprecation of GeoOrigin in the Geospatial component, addition
of the MedicalInterchange profile, and addition of the UNIT statement
to vary base and derived units for scene length, angle, force and mass.
Multiple specification refinements and errata have also been approved.
As ever, comments by the general public and Web3D Consortium members
are welcome. The working group diligently reviews and resolves all
issues and improvements, both on mailing list dialog and frequent
(typically weekly) teleconferences.

Special thanks to Richard Puk, ISO Standards Committee 24 Working Group 6
Convener and X3D Specification Editor, Dr. Myeong Won Lee for UNIT work,
Dr. Nicholas Polys and Virginia Tech students for Volume Visualization,
Dr. Chris Thorne for viewpoint-centric rendering in geospatial contexts,
and many others. The Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine
(DICOM) standards committee (http://medical.nema.org) provided crucial
review and collaboration on medical and volume technologies. Many other
working groups and individuals provided essential contributions, and
all deserve our thanks.
As an author convenience, the X3D Tooltips can now link directly to each
node in the X3D Specification Node Index. This makes using X3D correctly
easier than ever before.

Ongoing improvements are welcome. We are grateful to work with so many
knowledgable and motivated colleagues, practitioners, authors and
implementers. We are looking forward to continued progress at the
Web3D Conference and SIGGRAPH in Los Angeles, 4-9 August 2012.
Sincerely,
Don Brutzman and Leonard Daly, X3D Working Group co-chairs
