 Visualization and Virtual Reality Specialist


The Visionarium Lab at Virginia Tech is an international leader in
immersive and web virtual reality visualization who supports science,
engineering and design activities across the University –
https://vis.arc.vt.edu/ . We are looking for motivated candidates who want
to use 3D graphics and scientific visualization to solve the big problems
at the cutting-edge of research. As part of the Advanced Research Computing
(ARC) group – http://www.arc.vt.edu , the advertised position will work
closely with computational faculty and students and Information Technology
teams to provide high-performance visualization environments.

The position is responsible for maintaining and developing visual computing
systems and solutions for the broad community of Virginia Tech faculty and
student stakeholders; these solutions will be strategic and driven by ARC
leadership. Strong communication skills are valued for interdisciplinary
work. The successful candidate must have experience in the following:
Linux/Unix system administration, Windows system administration,
programming (such as OpenGL, C++, python) and some scene graph technology
for interactive 3D graphics. A BS/BA in Computer Science or a related
engineering discipline is required. Prior experience with immersive VR
systems, software development, SQL/scripting, and/or web standards is a

The breakdown of the percent effort for this position is as follows:

*30 % Maintenance, Testing, Quality Assurance*
• Maintain VisCube and lab machines (with patches, new installs, etc.)
• Maintain common user authentication, directory structures and
network-accessible file system (with backups)
• Maintain Visual Computing webservers and multi-user collaboration services
• Maintain common lab equipment such as displays and input devices

*40 % Deployment / Support*
• Deploy and improve the software stack for the Visionarium platforms
• Support day-to-day operations including responding to help tickets

• Provide basic consulting for other visualization and graphics activities
around campus
• Fulfilling user requests such as assisting faculty and students with
setting up visualization pipelines and toolkits
• Support education and outreach activities for interactive 3D
visualization (e.g. online how-tos)

 *20% Development*
• Communication and 3D user interface components for input devices and
output displays
• Script wrappers and processing pipelines for visualizing scientific data
• Services and documentation for visualization processing and rendering

*10% Research*

• Pursue a research agenda and collaborate with other researchers to create
opportunities and proposals for external grants consistent with the goals
of ARC
