They’re key on on metadata. If one is creating a generic program to create
X3D, the difficulty is putting in specific scene metadata into generic
code. If you do one off programs to create scenes, it’s a lot easier to
add scene specific stuff. What I think we’ll see is specific programs to
create specific scenes, so adding metadata to scenes will be easy. We just
don’t have a large corpus of specific programs to create specific virtual
worlds, because most are in closed source, gaming worlds. We can hope that
tools like Castle Game Engine will provide a raft of these gaming worlds,
or public sector worlds like America’s Army (I’m dating myself) or
web-based worlds become more prevalent.
There do exist a raft of scenes in non-Turing complete languages, which do
have a raft of metadata, we just don’t have programs that add metadata
which isn’t captured from humans.
How many human-oriented authoring tools automatically provide metadata? I
don’t even think X3D-Edit does that? Idk. I know it does complain about
missing metadata.
