Agenda

1. Review of the last minutes (Mapping to VRML)

- Dick's comments

...

Dick reminded us that an Annex for a mapping to VRML needs to be a work item for the H-Anim update.

Same for X3D (node signatures) specification. [change specification for VRML and X3D specification].

Dick should provide language (potential action item) to Myeong about this to include in the NWIP.

Dick reminded us until we have text "ready to go", don't submit NWIP.

I would like to clarify the meaning of mapping to VRML with the following considerations. Please let me know if these are correct.

- H-Anim updates should be conformed to VRML and X3D - In other words, VRML and X3D should be updated with the H-Anim changes. - The following NP items are added: ==> VRML and X3D updates according to H-Anim updates (mapping to VRML)

2. NWIP scope

Through many discussions, several new items were also considered for the NWIP. If there are no implementers, it may take time to develop standards for some items. I recommend that the items be classified as in development at the next stage. Therefore, we need to classify most of the items as to be implemented in a shorter time frame, and the others requiring more time to be implemented.

In summary:

The first NWIPs this year include the items to be implemented in a shorter time frame, as well as those having participants for implementation. The second NWIP next year includes the items requiring more time to be implemented, as well as those not yet having participants for implementation. In other words, we have parallel development for both groups of items, but each group has a different schedule. At least, each item should be implemented by one or more participants.

The first NWIP scope is considered as follows:

1) Definition of a humanoid character model capable of generating motion from captured motion data

2) Definition of a humanoid character model capable of generating motion using 3D scanner data

3) Definition of a humanoid character model capable of generating motion using general motion definition such as keyframe, interpolation, kinematics, and dynamics for human figures

4) Definition of motion parameters for transferring or exchanging motion between different human character models

5) Definition of a motion data interface for including motion data

6) Definition of a motion viewer’s functionality

7) Definition of interoperable human behavior prototypes

8) Provision for easier exchange of characters from design systems to H-Anim systems

9) VRML and X3D updates according to H-Anim updates (mapping to VRML)

The second NWIP scope is considered as follows:

10) Definition of 3D skinning interface

11) Definition of recording interface for human motion such as gait

==> What do you think of this item being included in 7) above?

12) Faces, hands, fingers, feet, and toes

13) Others

3. Planning H-Anim WG Wiki update

We discussed how H-Anim Specification is

- independent

- defines functionality in a language-independent way

- would have mappings defined for X3D separately in X3D specification

- would have mappings defined for VRML as an informational annex (since VRML specification work is not an ongoing project)

Don and Dick have responsibility for ensuring that the H-Anim mappings for X3D are done correctly. Generation of VRML97 mappings are automatically produced by existing converters. Integration into the specification documents is then a pretty straightforward editorial task.

It would be interesting if someday mappings/encodings of H-Anim models to other humanoid standards or practices appeared to be useful.

We discussed whether the list of 13 items (detailed below) were feasible in 1 year, and if it might be better to split them out.

Many of the items are closely interrelated and so it might be best to try resolving and harmonizing whatever is practical first. Then when the deadline arrives (perhaps one year) we see what is not ready and defer those parts.

Item 10) Skinning was something that was almost complete during the prior lifetime of the H-Anim group. It should stay in scope.

Item 12) Facial models - many exist and have been published, they would needed to be considered compared and evaluated. This should be a distinct item with special models for different purposes, direct scanning might not be possible.

Item 12) hands, fingers, feet, and toes should be considered separately from face. Only toes need to be added, the rest are already defined in H-Anim.

We agreed that the following items could be merged:

7) Definition of interoperable human behavior prototypes

11) Definition of recording interface for human motion such as gait

New Work Item Proposals are not always completed 100%, it will be OK if most work gets done before the goal deadline and other work is left as future work if not ready for standardization.

NWIP submission when the group is ready - usually that means draft text.

We could also do the NWIP plan as part of the Web3D rechartering of H-Anim Working Group.
