I think a JSON encoding of X3D would be fantastic. I imagine it would be much like classic VRML but with lots more quotes. 

You could even sell it to the Three.js folks as a replacement for their JSON Model format [https://github.com/mrdoob/three.js/wiki/JSON-Model-format-3.1]

btw, I've got a simple multiuser X3D demo working that uses X3DOM, Node.js and WebSockets sending JSON between browsers - it's pretty crude but I'll clean up the code and share it as soon as I can.
