isn't there a way to turn sandbox off so the parent page DOM can 
interact with the iframe?

http://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_iframe_sandbox.asp

then you can put parent dom event handlers on the iframe. So, it looks 
like you can make an iframe work like an object.
