This page on our web3d wiki : https://www.web3d.org/wiki/index.php/X3D_and_HTML5_examples <https://www.web3d.org/wiki/index.php/X3D_and_HTML5_examples> : was reviewed at the Aug 30 Communication group meeting.

The page present a number of variations on presenting X3D content, either inline or as a URL to an x3d file, in HTML markup embedded in an <object> tag. Historically, these examples are from a time in which plug-ins to a web browser would be a relevant deployment method for X3D content.

So to consider updating this page, I'd like to propose an assertion: I'd would be really like for it to be demonstrated wrong, but I think, unfortunately, that it is correct:

"At this time (August 2022), there is no publically distributed plug-in software that works for current version of a major browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari) that displays X3D presented in an <object> tag"

Comments, especially a demonstrable example of such a current available plug-in, would be welcome! Obviously, the two major javascript-based libraries, X3DOM and X-ITE, are functional, available, and vital, but they are not the same as browser plugins.

And also, the current browsers are configurable so that they can retrieve an X3D file from the web and open it on the desktop with a stand-alone X3D viewer such as Instant Player, again, this is not the same as a plugin.

Thank you for comments
