[x3d-public] X3D Working Group agenda 9 DEC 2022: HAnim issue, X3D4 spec finalization meetings, X3D-Edit progress

Brutzman, Donald (Don) (CIV) brutzman at nps.edu
Fri Dec 9 09:48:53 PST 2022

Attendees: Anita Havele, Nicholas Polys, Dick Puk, Don Brutzman. Prior
inputs: Vince Marchetti.

There will be a meeting of X3D Working Group on Friday 9 December 2022 at
09-10 pacific.

0.	Agenda review.

1.	X3D4 international ballot results.

a.	Happy to report that X3D4 Architecture unanimously passed voting by
national bodies for Draft International Standard (DIS)!
b.	Editors (Dick and Don) are scheduling an editors meeting with ISO,
hopefully this calendar year.
c.	Web3D members and X3D group remains welcome to review all issues and
proposed resolutions in Mantis.
d.	X3D4 Press Release currently being prepared by Anita. Inputs
welcome.
e.	It is possible that resolution of DIS comments will directly lead to
our requesting immediate document resubmission to ISO/IEC as International
Specification (IS) prose. We will keep leaning forward!

2.	DIS specifications for C, C++, C#, ISO/IEC 19777-3,4,5 (for X3D
version 3.3). Myeong Won Lee is ready for review - we need to proceed
expeditiously in January to determine readiness and hopefully finish that.
Web3D Consortium does final DIS review before submission (and relinquishing
control) to ISO.

3.	Mantis 1410, X3D HAnim support for applying textures to skin. We
reviewed and refined the issue. Summary of next steps:

*	Mantis 1410: HAnimHumanoid skin definitions have no way to assign
textures
*	https://www.web3d.org/member-only/mantis/view.php?id=1410
*	We recommend
* Taking a generous view of HAnim2 wording "[indexed mesh objects as defined
by the representation]"
* to allow identical usage of a Shape node, thus ensuring that textures are
possible on animated human skin.
* This approach more closely aligns X3D4 with intent described in HAnim2.
* Such an approach is already demonstrated in our examples.
* Building more detailed examples will be helpful. Williams and Brutzman to
continue.

Suggested prose will be along the lines of
* (keep current regarding geometry nodes, add words along the lines of)
* The skin field can also contain a single Shape node which contains one of
the previous geometry nodes

4.	HAnim work on apparel, motion animation and avatars.

Good meetings with Web3D members about apparel, and HAnim2 correspondences,
following up on Web3D 2022 workshop and IEEE 3D Body Processing working
group efforts.

The needed functional capabilities all appear to be representable, no
technical blockers identified. Further examples will certainly help
illustrate how to do this.

Here is one example that converted a model from Joe produced in 2004,
converted to X3D, work in progress:

*	X3D Example Archives: Humanoid Animation, Characters, Joe Skeleton
Site Skin Salute Walk
*	Attempting to show skeleton, skin, sites and animation
*

keletonSiteSkinSaluteWalkIndex.html

Work continues. Joint meeting for principals in each group is planned for
some time in January.

5.	Upcoming meetings for US National Body INCITS graphics committee
quarterly meeting.

*	Friday 16 DEC, 10 pacific or 1300 eastern
*	Request Nicholas or Vince represent Web3D Consortium and X3D

6.	Continuing installations and improvements for X3D-Edit. Initial
tests with just-released Netbeans 16 successful. Next release will be this
weekend.

*	SourceForge X3D Files, X3D-Edit
*	https://sourceforge.net/projects/x3d/files

Have fun with X3D!

all the best, Don
