[x3d-public] announce: X3D-Edit 4.0 beta release

Java 17 or later is local-installation prerequisite. (We are testing using
OpenJDK 19 prior to release.)

The X3D-Edit zip version is for extracting an archive that can be run by
Java on local machine. Operating system agnostic.

The X3D-Edit .nbm NetBeans module is for running as a Tool > Plugin inside
NetBeans (We are using latest NetBeans 15.) . Operating system agnostic.

The windows installer (as expected) actually installs the application on
Windows. Then you must update the configuration file as described in the
README. If you use default installation directory, you may need
administrator permissions.

We have successful test reports for MacOSX. Requires .conf adjustment
similar to windows installation.

This same information is available in the README at the release site:

When we figure out how to configure autoinstallers to avoid end-user
reconfiguration of Java, we will of course add that. Seems like a NetBeans
deficiency. At least this capability is now built into NetBeans (we no
longer have to use a third-party autoinstall generator).

Please note that the application is X3D-Edit, not glTF edit or glb edit. It
works on .x3d files using XML encoding. Menu items offer many import and
export options.

When loading a model, NetBeans warning "File too large" is always reported
at 1MB file size. Many systems can handle larger files - usually works for
me - you have been warned!

Thanks for all tests and reports.

all the best, Don

NPS WARNING: *external sender* verify before acting.

I couldn't load large files such as Astronaut.glb and XML produced by
view3dscene. I know this is a standard dialog, and I used to have to edit
the netbeans.conf file.

I'm not sure how to do this from NetBeans on Windows 10.

I will try a smaller file.

THanks!

Possible upgrades to README:

Best practices on Windows 10 seem to be using the zip version:

x3deditmodulesuite.zip

First, unzip.

Follow README instructions for setting jdkhome in
x3deditmodulesuite/etc/x3deditmodulesuite.conf

Run 64 bit version for Windows.

$ x3deditmodulesuite/bin/x3deditmodulesuite64.exe

Is there a test plan to go through, or should I just test my own files and
stumble around as usual?

I'll be snoozing for a while.

Multiple builds are found at this site:

*	Installer versions are provided for Windows, Mac and Linux.
*	A zip archive is provided for systems with Java JDK 17 or greater.
*	A plugin module is provided for Apache NetBeans users.

Some configuration is needed to get a current Java working, see the README
at above site.

User expectations: note that this beta release is primarily focused on
restoring lost X3D-Edit functionality. Once stability is demonstrated on
multiple platforms, we expect that authoring support for X3D4 nodes and
features will be added steadily.

Special thanks to Terry Norbraten for wrestling X3D-Edit 4.0 back into
shape. What a heavy lift.

Have fun with X3D-Edit 4.0! 8)
