[x3d-public] sideways diffusion?

Back in 1985-1986, after being introduced to monte carlo ray tracing, my
professor, Ken Joy, made me aware of monte carlo work another student, Ben
Garlick, was doing, adding “raindrop” noise to a terrain to make it more
realistic.
I am wondering if this sideways noise is being used in current diffusion
models. Especially motion diffusion and giving the pictures a painted look.
How might the volume rendering part of X3D be used with diffusion?
Ben went on to work at SGI and NVIDIA, and last I heard, was at Grail,
probably pursuing a similar idea with cancer detection.
