Fraunhofer did a paper on this topic some years back:

Y. Jung, J. Keil, J. Behr, S. Webel, M. Zöllner, T. Engelke, H. Wuest, and
M. Becker. 2008. Adapting X3D for multi-touch environments. In *Proceedings
of the 13th international symposium on 3D web technology* (Web3D '08). ACM,
New York, NY, USA, 27-30. DOI=10.1145/1394209.1394218
http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1394209.1394218

and here is a tutorial using Instant Reality and a HyperSurfaceSensor node
