Metaverse Standards Forum - Exploratory 3D Web Interoperability proposal

The 3D Web Interoperability Exploratory Group proposal has been accepted by the Metaverse Standards Forum oversight committee. The proposal offers opportunity to find the right mix of Standards and best practices to suit the needs of the next Metaverse. All are welcome to join and participate in these discussions as we build on this proposal and bring more value to the Metaverse!

Web3D Consortium and it's members along with the support of it's SDO liaison partners recently submitted a 3D Web Interoperability proposal  which was accepted as an Exploratory Group by the Metaverse Standards Forum (MSF) Oversight committee. Next steps are to develop a charter and build consensus among the MSF and SDO communities and form a MSF Domain Working Group. All are welcome to join and participate as we build on this proposal and bring more value to the Metaverse. Our first meeting is on Thursday, April 20, 2023 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM PDT.

MSF provides a venue for our Standards' visibility and a means to coordinate across a broad and coherent ecosystem. The proposal offers opportunity to find the right mix of Standards and practices to suit the needs of the MSF community. It is important that we build consensus among the MSF and SDO communities. SDOs will hold increasing importance as Metaverse concepts become more deployable and scalable. Our goal here is to make the Metaverse fully interoperable with the World Wide Web and the standards ecosystem.

  • Allow and support mixed-use of different asset formats in a single world,
  • Interconnect 3D worlds and experiences into many runtime environments,
  • Increase synergy and reduce duplication of standards. Identify gaps and fragmentation,
  • Create a roadmap to meet the gaps and provide SDOs guidance on future standardization.

We believe that this formulation will bring achievable benefits and wins for all.
