X3D Version 4.0 ISO Committee Draft Approved
Primary tabs
X3D 4.0 ISO Committee Draft has been approved. Ballot for X3D version 4 Draft International Standard (DIS) is expected to occur June 2022.
X3D V4.0 is highly mature with multiple implementations. Web3D Consortium continues to track and apply editorial comments as well as resolution of any functional difficulties that may emerge as part of implementation, evaluation and standardization. All feedback welcome. The latest X3D® version 4 (X3D4) Architecture Specification is a major upgrade to the Extensible 3D (X3D) Graphics International Standard that provides close support for the HTML5 Recommendation, Khronos glTF Physically Based Rendering (PBR), and Web Audio API. X3D4 is the basis of multiple file encodings and programming language bindings, as illustrated in the X3D Specification Relationships diagram.
Web3D Working Groups proceed at the best speed supported by member and public contributions. Stable progress is paramount: we only advance standards when they are ready. Draft specification documents are maintained in version control at Web3D Consortium github with member-only access. We encourage members to participate in these important discussions as we continue to extend X3D. Join Web3D, participate in our Working Groups in developing our standards and influence Web3D technology by voting on standards. Web3D Standards Adoption Process Guidelines
Additional ISO approvals as well last month: 19777-3, 4 and 5 (for C, C++ and C#) were approved as Working Drafts on 15 DEC 2021. As working drafts, disposition of these documents remains under the control of Web3D Consortium.
Extensible 3D (X3D) Graphics and Humanoid Animation (H-Anim) include a coordinated set of steadily evolving ISO standards. The Web3D Consortium carefully improves and evolves our standards while maintaining long-term archival stability. These standards are developed, tested, maintained and updated by Web3D Consortium members. Following public comment and approval by the Web3D Consortium, they are submitted to International Standards Organization (ISO) for a series of annual reviews.
